Produce giveaway slated for Wednesday
ANDERSON — The Anderson Impact Center in collaboration with Second Harvest Food Bank will have a fresh produce giveaway at 2 p.m. Wednesday, while supplies last, at The Anderson Impact Center, 630 Nichol Ave., Anderson.
Individuals are encouraged to bring their own bags.
Public Defender Commission to meet
ANDERSON — The Madison County Public Defender Commission will hold its regular second quarter meeting at 4 p.m. today in Hearing Room C on the Third Floor of the Madison County Government Center.
Credit Union collecting supplies
MUNCIE — Indiana Members Credit Union (IMCU) and Foundation has partnered with various other agencies for its ninth annual School Supply Drive.
The IMCU Muncie branch located in Ball Memorial Hospital, 2401 University Ave., will serve as public collection site for the school supply drive, with bins in their lobbies during branch hours, through July 19.
Needed items include: backpacks, erasers, #2 pencils, calculators, crayons, markers, spiral notebooks, pens, art boxes, pencil sharpeners, rulers, notebook paper, scissors, pocket folders, colored pencils, glue sticks, hygiene products, hand sanitizer, tissues, alarm clocks and composition notebooks (College Rule).
Cemetery Commission to meet
ANDERSON — The Madison County Cemetery Commission will be meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m., third floor, Anderson Public Library, 111 E. 12th St., Anderson. Various township pioneer cemeteries will be discussed. The public is welcome.
Soil Health Workshop set
ANDERSON — The Madison County Soil and Water Conservation is currently taking reservations for a Soil Health Workshop for area agricultural producers.
The workshop will be held at the Tipton County 4-H Fairgrounds on Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
Topics include holistic management by Joshua Dukart and cover crops, nitrogen management, no-till setups and residue management by Barry Fisher. Lunch will be provided. For information call 644-4249, ext. 3.
Fertilizer plant explodes, killing one
UNION MILLS — A fertilizer plant in northwest Indiana has exploded, killing one person. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that one person was killed in a fertilizer plant in Union Mills.
Sheriff’s Deputy Neil Lachmund says all other people are accounted for after the explosion Monday afternoon at the Union Mills Co-op. It’s about 50 miles southeast of Chicago. Lachmund says two other people are being checked for injuries.
The plant is about 60 miles southeast of Chicago.
Police say two killed in semitrailer crash
LAFAYETTE, Ind. — State police say a semitrailer ran into a trailer stopped along Interstate 65 near Lafayette, killing two men working on the parked truck.
The crash happened about 7:15 a.m. Monday in I-65’s southbound lanes a few miles north of Lafayette. Police said the two men fatally injured were working on the trailer parked on the shoulder when the semi hit it.
That semi then went off the right side of the highway and into a wooded area, where it caught fire. State police Sgt. Kim Riley says the driver whose truck hit the trailer wasn’t hurt.
