Bids for Kids raises about $70,000

ANDERSON — Totals are still being tallied, but this year’s Bids for Kids auction made about $70,000, Anderson Exchange Club Foundation President Fred Sweigart said.

Sweigart had hoped to raise $80,000 at the auction, but he’s not disappointed by the amount raised. “$70,000 is better than $50,000,” he said.

This year’s amount is consistent with the amount raised in the last five Bids for Kids auction, Sweigart said.

Ind.109 closed for rail crossing repairs

ANDERSON —The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to close Indiana 109 at the CSX railroad crossing just south of Anderson at 8 a.m. Monday. This northbound/southbound closure at mile marker 19 is scheduled to remain in effect through May 16.

A signed detour will route motorists around the closure via U.S. 36, Ind. 9/Ind. 67 and Interstate 69. CSX requires the 12-day closure on Ind. 109 to replace its existing rail crossing with new full-depth surface and tracks.

Inmates captured after jail escape

NEW CASTLE — The Henry County sheriff said two inmates who escaped from his jail during an overnight work assignment were back in custody after being captured in New Castle.

Sheriff Butch Baker said the two men were captured early Monday afternoon inside a home near New Castle High School in the city about 40 miles east of Indianapolis. Michael D. Bertram, 37, of Knightstown and Johnny B. Dennis, 41, of New Castle had escaped from the jail about 4 a.m. Monday. The men had been buffing floors in the county jail when Bertram used a stolen knife to cut a hole in a second-story jail wall, allowing both he and Dennis to climb onto the roof and jump to freedom.
