General Assembly returns June 17

INDIANAPOLIS — Members of the Indiana General Assembly will return for one day next month to make technical corrections to some key legislation they passed earlier this year.

A criminal sentencing overhaul passed earlier this year accidentally softened penalties for some serious crimes. In another bill, a new tax was accidentally established on alternative fuels. A so-called “technical correction” day will be held June 17 to fix those errors.

Indiana starts 911-texting service

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana residents with Verizon Wireless service can now text 911 dispatchers in nearly a third of the state’s counties as part of a push that will benefit the deaf, those with speech-impairments or people in hostage situations who are unable to speak to dispatchers.

Statewide 911 Board Executive Director Barry Ritter said that as of Wednesday morning emergency dispatchers in 28 Indiana counties had been equipped and trained to handle text-to-911 calls. Madison County is not currently among them.
