Produce giveaway Wednesday

ANDERSON — The Anderson Impact Center in collaboration with Second Harvest Food Bank will have a fresh produce giveaway at 2 p.m. Wednesday, while supplies last, at The Anderson Impact Center, 630 Nichol Avenue. Individuals are encouraged to bring their own bags.

Floyd to speak on human trafficking

ALEXANDRIA — The United Methodist Church located on County Road 400 East, Alexandria, will host a lecture by Kandace Floyd from Alternatives, Inc. of Madison County from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The church is located off Ind. 28 East to CR 400 E. Turn north to the next intersection. Floyd will speak on human trafficking.

Man hurt in tree stand fall

MARION — A Marion man was hurt Sunday afternoon when he tumbled 20 feet to the ground while installing a tree stand in rural Grant County, Indiana conservation officers report.

Tracy Theurer, 50, was taken to Marion General Hospital after the 2:45 p.m. mishap, which happened in the 7800 block of East County Road 200 South. According to the investigating officer, while attaching the stand to the tree one of his straps broke, allowing Theurer, who was not wearing a safety harness, to fall 20 feet to the ground.

ACLU says Indiana jail still overcrowded despite deal

INDIANAPOLIS — A lawsuit says Vigo County officials are still allowing overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in the county jail despite a 13-year-old settlement.

Records show that officials in the western Indiana county agreed in 2000 to settle a federal lawsuit by limiting the jail population to 268 inmates. But the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana alleges the county hasn't lived up to the agreement, allowing the jail population to swell to 293, according to an October report by the state Department of Correction. That report referred to the jail as "overpopulated."

New state auditor sworn into office

INDIANAPOLIS — Dwayne Sawyer was sworn in as the new state auditor, making him the first black Republican to hold a statewide office in Indiana. The state's chief justice administered the oath to Sawyer during a ceremony Monday at the Statehouse.
