Lions, Kiwanis host musical foursome

ANDERSON — Anderson Noon Lions Club will have John Gunter, Carl Erskine, Jeff Hardin and Dan Daugherty as the program Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 12th and Jackson streets. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m., program at 12:15 p.m. The Noon Kiwanis also meet with the Lions.  

Cost of lunch is $7 and reservations (not required) can be made by calling George Smith at 642-0243.

Meteorologists to be at Literacy Night

ANDERSON — Tenth Street Elementary School will host Literacy Night at 5:30 p.m. Thursday,

The school was selected as the first in Anderson to host WTHR meteorologists Chuck Lofton, Chris Wright and Nicole Micensik for a night of weather exploration and discovery.

Channel 13 will also be televising weather reports from the school that evening. All activities and information are geared for students grades K-5.

Wounded warrior returns home

ANDERSON — Tim Senkowski has returned home from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

To help get Senkowski and his family established in a new home, donations are welcome. Cash donations for the Senkowskis can be made to any PNC bank through the Timothy Frank Senkowski fund. The routing number for the deposit-only account is 071921891, and the account number is 4804575502.

Library receives grant for kids’ books

ANDERSON — Anderson Public Library announced a $100 grant from the Lapel Community Youth Commission and South Madison Community Foundation. The library chose to purchase 13 children’s books with the grant funds in order to aid its efforts to promote early literacy.

Church seeks  project volunteers

DALEVILLE — Daleville Christian Church, 14220 W. Daleville Road, is in need of volunteers to quilt lap blankets and stuff teddy bears. The teddy bears will be donated to local emergency workers for children in emergency situations. The quilted lap blankets will be donated to local hospitals for chemotherapy patients.

State’s specialty plates limited

INDIANAPOLIS — A plan overhauling Indiana’s specialty auto license plate system and requiring all groups with plates to sell 500 a year has been signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence.

The bill approved by lawmakers creates an eight-member bipartisan commission to review requests from nonprofit groups seeking specialty plates. The panel will check financial reports at least once a decade on how the groups are spending their plate proceeds.

The bill sets a limit of 150 specialty plates.

Valparaiso school evacuated after leak

VALPARAISO — Valparaiso police say a middle school in the northern Indiana city was evacuated as a precaution after crews working nearby hit a natural gas line, causing a leak.

Police Sgt. Mike Grennes said authorities were called to a neighborhood about 9:45 a.m. CDT Tuesday about the smell of gas. Ben Franklin Middle School was evacuated as a precaution because winds were blowing the gas toward the school.
