Governor recognizes long-term state employees

Indiana Gov. Michael Pence has awarded several medallions to local state employees for their dedicated years of service.

Among the many state honorees, the Indiana Department of Correction had 27 retired and current employees recognized for 40 and 35 years of service. The Correctional Industrial Facility had two 35-year employees and one 40-year employee recognized.

Genia Juroff, a 35-year veteran, joined the Department of Correction in 1978, as a Secretary 4 at the Pendleton Correctional Facility. She transferred to the Correctional Industrial Facility in 1988, and is an Administrative Secretary 2 for Superintendent Wendy Knight.

“It has been a great career and one that I have enjoyed,” Juroff said. “The changes within the facility and DOC have been exciting, and it was wonderful to be a part of those changes.”

Tim Purcell, another 35-year employee, started his career as a Program Coordinator in 1978, and then was promoted to a program director position at IDOC Central Office, before working as a case manager at PCF.

Purcell worked as a classification specialist at the Reception Diagnostic Center before becoming an assistant superintendent at the Indiana Boys’ School and then the assistant superintendent of Re-entry at CIF.

“DOC has been an excellent learning experience with a wide variety of opportunities to pursue,” he said.

Jeanie Cohn, who is CIF’s 40-year DOC employee, started her career at the Indiana State Prison in June of 1973. In 1984, Cohn was transferred to the Indiana Youth Center before taking a position at the Indiana State Farm in Putnamville.

Cohn was one of the first counselors at the Indiana Reformatory when she moved to Pendleton, and CIF opened in 1988. In 1993, Cohn became a case manager and continues to work in that capacity.

Of her DOC career she said, “Forty years sounds like a long time but it goes so fast it doesn’t feel like it. I was very fortunate because I worked with many good and dedicated people over the years.”

Each of the recipients received a pewter medallion with the State of Indiana seal and the recipient’s name and years of service engraved on the back.
