Braves run away from Tribe

ANDERSON — Brebeuf Jesuit used its speed Tuesday night to seemingly win the race to every loose ball and run the Anderson boys basketball team out of the Tepee on Senior Night.

The Braves (14-4) forced 23 turnovers — 14 in the first half — and came down with two key offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter to surge past the Indians 73-50.

Anderson (9-12) ended the regular season with back-to-back losses, and the one thing both games had in common was a parade of layups for the opponent.

Brebeuf’s P.J. Thompson scored a game-high 24 points, scoring 19 in the first half as the beneficiary of the Braves’ lightning-quick transition game. Thompson shot 10-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line.

He came out of the game after landing awkwardly on his ankle midway through the fourth quarter and did not return.

Brebeuf entered the final quarter with a 14-point lead after going into the half with a 45-26 advantage. Anderson was more aggressive offensively in the second half, starting the third quarter with an 8-2 run and threatening to get the deficit under double digits.

The Tribe twice pulled within 12, but a late basket by Brebeuf’s Sam Snyder seemed to halt the hosts’ momentum at the end of the period.

The Braves were methodical with the basketball in the final quarter, content to pass it around the perimeter and milk precious seconds off the clock. That strategy became more pronounced after Thompson left the floor.

Brebeuf scored just 16 points in the fourth quarter, and many of them came in the final four minutes.

Anderson trailed just 59-48 when the Braves called timeout with 4:04 to play. The Indians had two chances to grab loose balls after missed shots on the ensuing possession, but Brebeuf came away with the basketball both times.

Tanner Webster converted the final rebound into a layup, starting a 14-0 run that sealed the victory for the Braves.

Freshman Zac Owens led the Tribe with 16 points, and sophomore Kobe Clay added 12 in the paint. Junior Cameron Miles led Anderson with six rebounds off the bench.

Adam Kroot (14 points) and Andrew Terrell (11) also finished in double figures for the Braves.

The Indians will play Pendleton Heights in the first round of the Class 4A sectional at New Castle on March 5.
