Wilson claims winged sprint victory

ANDERSON, Ind. — Jacob Wilson turned in a dominating performance to win the Must See Winged Sprint feature at Anderson Speedway on Wednesday.

Starting from the pole position, Wilson pulled away from the start from Aaron Pierce.

His run to the checkers was interrupted on Lap 16 when Jimmy Kite spun in Turn 3, erasing a sizeable lead.

Wilson got into lapped traffic on Lap 23, which allowed Pierce, JoJo Helberg and Brian Gerster to close. But by Lap 30 Wilson cleared the slower cars and again started to increase his lead over Pierce.

The second caution flag waved on Lap 39 when Brian Gerster spun while battling with JoJo Helberg for the third position as they entered Turn 3. The two split a lapped car on the back straight with Gerster slipping inside entering the corner, but he was tapped by Helberg.

From there Wilson went on to win by 4.67 seconds over Pierce with Helberg, Troy DeCaire and Brian Olson rounding out the top five.

Helberg was looking to get the second leg of a $50,000 bonus. He won at Winchester Speedway; if he could have won the Must See 60 and the Little 500 he would have earned the bonus.

Rookie contender Spencer Bayston continued his impressive first year in the Mel Kenyon Midget Series by recording his fourth win in five races.

The Lebanon native has now won four of five races with the series and has a second in the fifth feature event.

Defending series champion Travis Young led the first 12 laps with Bayston quickly moving into contention from the fourth starting position.

Bayston several times looked to the inside of Young entering the third corner, but couldn’t make the pass stick until Lap 13.

He got alongside of Young in Turn 3 and, coming off the fourth corner, Bayston took the lead. Young glanced off the front straight wall, but was able to finish second.

Cordy Horn ran in the third position for most of the race with Jessica Bean and Dameron Taylor swapping the fourth position.

Bayston went on to the win by 1.8 seconds over Young followed by Horn, Bean and Taylor.

The lone caution flag waved on Lap 5 when Tony McCune attempted to get inside of Cole Fehr for the third spot. The two made contact with Fehr hitting the outside retaining wall and McCune finished for the night with a flat right rear tire.
