PH wins Yorktown invite

YORKTOWN — Pendleton Heights and Alexandria opened the 2014 golf season as part of the 15-team field at the Yorktown Invitational. Despite the abundance of blue skies and sunshine, the weather may have been more of a challenge than the 18 holes at The Players Club.

The Arabians shot the low team score of 313 led by senior Trevar Denney — who fired a 73, tying him with Muncie Central’s Keegan Bronnenberg for the individual title

“It was very tough as you can tell by the scores,” Denney said. “It didn’t really affect my tee ball, I just gripped the club lightly and swung smooth to hit the ball low and straight.”

Denney took second place by result of the tiebreaker, which was the individual’s score on Hole 4, the courses No. 1 handicap hole.

“It gives me a lot of confidence,” Pendleton’s No. 3 golfer said. “I was a little nervous coming out here with this wind and hitting the ball straight. I have been struggling with my irons, but my short game picked up.”

Denney finished birdieing three of his final four holes. He said as the event progressed he felt he had the chance to be in medalist contention and began to focus more and read his putts more carefully.

Pendleton Heights junior Zach Farrer shot second-low for the Arabians with a 76.

“Trevor Denney played about like I thought he would, Zack Farrer played about like I thought he would,” coach Jim Phillips said. “Colin (Proctor) struggled a little bit, Tyler (Meyer) struggled. So we will only improve off that 313, I think.”

Proctor, the Arabians No. 1 golfer, shot a 79 with four bogies, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey and just two birdies. Meyers lined up No. 2 and shot an 85 by carding six bogeys, a double-bogey and two triple-bogeys.
