FAIRMOUNT, Ind. — The Madison-Grant boys basketball team saw its share of ups and downs last season under first-year coach John Irwin, and after losing multiple key players the Argylls are hoping to see improvement as the season progresses.

They lost leading scorer Tyler Young, Brady Franklin, Kyle Massie and Cedric Presley to graduation, but the cupboard isn’t completely dry for Irwin’s squad.

Madison-Grant returns a group of players that all saw varsity action last year. Tyler McClellan, Jeremy Johnson, Austin Engle and Andrew Schwinn will be leaned on to lead a new era of Argylls after finishing 11-11 last year.

Irwin has a group of players that will be looked upon to not only see extended varsity minutes, but to actually contribute to a team that will need to fill in the blanks for the players that graduated from the 2011-12 team.

Jake Lemon, Brent Bugby, Tanner Wise and Matt Carey are the guys that Irwin has tabbed as his key newcomers for this season.

The key to Madison-Grant’s success this year will be how hard it goes in practice, and the coach is hoping that leads to them getting better against every opponent they face on their schedule.

“Some of our goals this season are to make sure we practice with a purpose every day,” said Irwin. “That we get better every game we play.”

With a solid mix of veterans and players getting their first taste of varsity minutes, the Argylls are hoping to return to their winning ways.
