INDIANAPOLIS — Elwood High School running back Sammy Mireles was named the state's top running back and finished fourth in the voting for Mr. Football on Wednesday after a record-setting senior season that left him Indiana's all-time leading rusher.
Terry McLaurin of Indianapolis Cathedral won the 2013 Indiana Mr. Football award.
The versatile playmaker received 19 votes from a panel of Indiana Football Coaches Association members. Cardinal Ritter quarterback Jake Purichia was second with nine votes, followed by Andrean quarterback Matt DeSomer with eight. Mireless received four votes.
McLaurin is listed as a receiver, which is where he's expected to play at Ohio State. But Cathedral coach Rick Streiff also used him as a kick returner, at running back and even on defense. He was the perfect fit in each role.
During Cathedral's 42-18 Class 5A state championship win over Westfield, McLaurin ran for two touchdowns, caught another and intercepted a pass.
McLaurin is the second Mr. Football winner from Cathedral. Otis Shannon, whose record Mireles surpassed this season, won the award in 2000.
