HOF Classic returning to Anderson

ANDERSON — The East-West Hall of Fame Football Classic returns to Anderson High School for the fourth straight year Friday at Collier Field.

The event, born in 2000, brings together players from 48 high schools across east-central Indiana and raises proceeds for the Richmond-based Indiana Football Hall of Fame.

"It gives us a chance for people to see our field and facility, and to show off the communtiy," Anderson athletic director Steve Schindler said.

The Anderson Community School Corporation was honored last year as the Hall of Fame's Founders' Award winner for its support of the classic, and Schindler served as honorary captain and tossed the coin to start the all-star game.

A pair of Indians have been confirmed to compete in this year's classic — Jerian Beard and Chris Schlenker — and, although rosters were not available in time for this edition, The Herald Bulletin's coverage area regularly is well-represented in the contest.

Players are nominated by their individual high school coaches, and then a team coordinator works with volunteer coaches to select the players for the East and West squads.

Anderson's Tim Boyd scored a pair of touchdowns for the West last season, and the team scored a 34-29 victory on the strength of a 34-yard touchdown pass with 54 seconds remaining.

The classic began life in Richmond, but the switch to a more centralized location has resulted in bigger rosters and larger crowds.

"We expect to have 65 to 70 kids per team," Schindler said. "To have that many kids and their families, it's going to be a good show."

This year's game also will feature the Colts in Motion mobile museum. The traveling exhibit showcases the three-decade history of the Indianapolis Colts and will be open outside Collier Field free of charge from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets cost $8 at the gate, and children 8 and under are admitted free.
