Arabians navigate wind, stand fourth at state finals

FRANKLIN — It wasn't quite British Open conditions, but the winds blew the scores up at the 78th Indiana Boys High School State Finals on Tuesday at The Legends Golf Course.

"I thought we struggled, but if you look at the team scores everyone struggled," said Pendleton Heights coach Jim Phillips, whose team is tied for fourth after the first day. "It was windy out there, and it was borderline affecting shots. That plays with your mind."

One player that wasn't affected by the wind was Pendleton Heights' Trevar Denney, who fired a 36-37 73 to led the Arabians and is in eighth place individually.

"Trevar did a good job, and he had really struggled at the regional," said Phillips. "He's been solid all year, and today he was steady all day. I'm proud of what he did."

Denney started his round with seven straight pars as Pendleton teed off on the 10th hole first. The senior was 1-over at the turn and birdied the fourth hole (his 13th), which is a 395-yard, par-4. He finished his round with five more pars to card his 73.

"The wind didn't affect me, but it affected most people," said Denney. "I played well, and I hit the ball solid, and I hit my irons good, but my putter wasn't there. Everything was going smooth tee to green. I hit a narrow fairway (on No. 4) and stuck my pitching wedge to 5 feet to get my birdie."

Denney was playing in the No. 5 spot for the Arabians, and No. 4 player Zach Farrer recorded the team's second best score with a 38-38 76 and is in 22nd place. Pendleton Heights' top two players, Tyler Meyer and Colin Proctor, both shot 38-40 78 and are tied for 43rd individually. No. 3 Chase Simpson finished with a 47-40 87, but take out his nine on the fourth hole and he was only 10 shots over par for the day.
