Mireles leaning toward joining Ravens

ANDERSON — The next big play record-setting running back Sammy Mireles makes could be at Anderson University.

The former Elwood High School star who set the state rushing record with 8,110 yards in his four-year career is in Indianapolis this week for the Grange Insurance Indiana High School Football All-Star Classic.

He'll be the lone representative from Madison County in the annual showcase Friday. The next helmet he pulls on after that contest could have a familiar Raven logo on the side.

"That's still kind of being decided," Mireles said of his college choice. "But more than likely it's going to be AU."

Anderson came into the picture late in the school year after head coach Bobby Ladner and his staff made a visit to Elwood to meet with a couple of Mireles' teammates. A home visit followed more recently and increased the Ravens' standing.

But Elwood head football coach and athletic director Marty Wells might have placed the swing vote.

"Once we got to the point where it looked like he wasn't going to be getting a scholarship, I started talking to him about Anderson University," Wells said. "I told him, as long as the Colts are there (for summer training camp), Anderson University is going to have some of the best Division III facilities in the nation."

As long as he can get the financials to work out, Mireles plans to take advantage of those facilities.

He'd be following in the footsteps of former Pendleton Heights star Denny Kimmel, who finished among the nation's rushing leaders at AU with 1,339 yards and was named an NCAA Division III All-American in 2005.

Like Mireles, who is listed at 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, Kimmel faced questions from larger schools about his size (5-8, 210). The former Arabian answered those questions emphatically with his record-setting college career.
