Varsity mixed doubles champs crowned at Tennis Classic

ANDERSON — The scene slightly resembled a war zone and slightly a country club at Anderson University on Thursday afternoon.

As Indianapolis Colts personnel started tearing down tennis court bleachers and parked what appeared to be nearly 100 golf carts in preparation for training camp starting on July 24, one of the first titles was handed out in the Community Hospital Anderson Tennis Classic.

In a match that had some familial implications, Sidnay Huck and Garrett Fensler defeated Dana Huck and Lucas Bolt 6-4, 6-0 in the Varsity Mixed Doubles championship match.

Sidnay and Garrett were the top seeds, even though they had never teamed together.

“The toughest thing about that is we don’t know what each other is going to do,” said Fensler.

Perhaps that accounted for a bit of the see-saw effect of the first set. Dana and Lucas took a 2-1 lead. Next came three straight results where the trailing team held serve and broke serve. Each time there was a changeover, a different team had taken the lead. The final time that happened, Sidnay and Garrett took a 5-4 lead on their way to a 6-4 victory in the first set.

The second set had no such drama as Sidnay and Garrett gathered momentum and won 6-0.

“I think in the second set we were more awake and ready to play,” said Sidnay. “We did a better job of keeping the ball in play.”

There was no added intensity in the match just because sisters were involved.

“I don’t think so,” said Sidnay. “It was just more fun.”

The Huck family name has long been associated with winning in this tournament, but the exact number of victories belonging to Sidnay is a mystery.

“I’ve got a bunch of these trophies,” she said, “but I’ve never counted them.”

The victory marked the start of a busy day for Fensler. He not only is still alive in all of the divisions in which he is entered, but “I have three more matches today,” he said at 5:15 p.m. when the doubles title match ended.

Play continues through Sunday in this tournament. Interested spectators are advised to leave early as it is unclear how many bleachers will survive the Colts’ invasion by the time Sunday rolls around. Some streets in the Anderson University area are already closed as well.
