Arabians sweep track titles again

FAIRMOUNT — Beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures greeted the competitors at the Madison County track meet Friday at Madison-Grant.

The Pendleton Heights boys and girls teams were looking to take the county for the third year in a row, but Anderson and Lapel had other ideas. It started off as a record-setting meet and finished with a bang as Pendleton was able to wrap up both titles. The girls held off a stiff challenge from Lapel to win 167.5-147, and the boys took the final event of the night to squeak out a 156.5-148.5 win over Lapel.

The times were fast early as Plensah-Tay Sakeuh of Lapel set a meet record of 15.35 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and Kiawna Cotrell of Pendleton broke her own record of 12.59 set last year with a 12.57 time in the 100-meter dash.

Sakeuh’s run in the hurdles bested the old record of 15.99 set in 2003. Sakeuh went on to break the 300-meter hurdle record by two seconds, finishing in 45.45 and winning the event by more than seven seconds.

If those records weren’t enough, Madison-Grant’s Bethani Herniak broke her own record in the shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 2.5 inches.

Along with Cotrell’s control of the short events, the distance runners for Pendleton were able to get the show started and finished it even stronger with Alex Buck setting the 3,200-meter record in the next-to-last girls event with a time of 11:53.8. Buck shattered the old county record by nine seconds and beat teammate Alli McCarty to the line by 15 seconds. Katie Quick of Frankton finished third, more than 90 seconds behind Buck.

But even with the strength of the Arabians in the short and distance events, it was the hurdles and high jump that helped provide the difference. Shaelee Roy finished fifth in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles to score valuable points for Pendleton.
