Marauders edge Tribe, Arabians at PH Invite

PENDLETON — Less than a week after a close win in the Madison County track meet, the Pendleton Heights boys played host to the 59th annual Pendleton Heights Invitational on Thursday night. Anderson returned to defend its 2013 title, and the host Arabians had not won the event since 2007. In the end, Mt. Vernon spoiled the night, scoring valuable points late to overtake the Indians and win the event 133-127 over Anderson.

Pendleton Heights was third with 114 points, Yorktown was fourth, Lapel fifth, Liberty Christian sixth and Frankton seventh.

Anderson scored a win in the 4x800-meter relay, the first track event of the night. The Indians also picked up a win in the high jump with Khalil Williams.

The Indians led Mt. Vernon 109-99 after 13 of the 16 events, but the Marauders’ Aaron Rush outpaced the field in the 3,200-meter run and Brisco Wood finished second in the 800-meter run to erase the deficit.

“We made too many mistakes, (but) we’re young and inexperienced,” Anderson coach Cary House said. “Our 4-by-8 team did a great job, and our high jumper was as steady as ever. Those points we can count on.”

Alonzo West was second in the long jump, and Bryant White finished third in the shot put and second in the discus.

The host Arabians had some solid performances in the short and distance events as well as the relays. Zach Taylor came home first in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and led off the 4X400-meter relay win. Ashton Wilson won the 800-meter run and anchored the 4X400-meter relay victory.

“We have a really good 4-by-400 team,” said Pendleton coach Ryan Potter of the foursome of Taylor, Kaid Hutchinson, Chandler Wilson and Ashton Wilson. “Zach Taylor is looking great for us. He ran the 200 in under 23 seconds for the first time this season.”
