Wigwam timeline pushed back

ACS, city facing June 30 deadline

ANDERSON – The timeline for the possible ownership of the iconic Wigwam complex by a private development group is being pushed back.

The original intent was to have the ownership of the Wigwam complex transferred from the Anderson Community Schools to the Anderson Redevelopment Commission on June 3 with final approval by the school board on June 10. The commission would then transfer ownership to private developers hoping to reopen the gym for sporting events, concerts and conferences.

The newest timeline has the effort to save the complex now bumping up against a June 30 deadline set in March between school and city officials.

If the transfer of ownership of the Wigwam is not completed by July 1, the ACS board may proceed with the demolition of the complex. The school system is set to open demolition bids June 10.

Michael Frischkorn, deputy director of the Anderson Economic Development Department, said Friday the original timeline was too tight to complete by June 10.

“We’re working on an appraisal of the property, which would include possible demolition costs and a Phase I environmental study,” he said. “The environmental study should be completed within two weeks and the ACS bids for demolition will help with the appraisal.”

Frischkorn said even if the school board makes a decision on the direction to take concerning the Wigwam, the city has until the end of June to complete the transfer.

The demolition bids are good for 90 days, which gives school and city officials time to iron out the details of the ownership transfer.

The intent is to have ACS transfer the Wigwam complex to the Anderson Redevelopment Commission at no cost and then have the Redevelopment Commission transfer ownership to Wigwam Sports & Entertainment LLC (WSE) at the same time.

Wigwam Sports & Entertainment LLC (WSE) is scheduled to make a presentation to the Anderson Redevelopment Commission on Tuesday.
