Hammel sisters cruise to finals in Community Hospital Anderson Tennis Classic

ANDERSON — As many of the matches were during the first day of the 34th Community Hospital Anderson Tennis Classic at the Anderson University tennis courts, the late afternoon Women’s A Doubles match between the Hammel sisters and the McCoy mother-daughter tandem was a family affair.

Sisters Alex and Michaela Hammel took the match 6-1, 6-3 over Katie McCoy and her mother Dru to move onto the finals in the Women’s A Doubles division which will be held next Saturday.

The Hammels dominated the match’s first several games, quickly going up 5-0 including breaking the McCoys, who had cruised to an easy win 6-0, 6-0 earlier in the day in the Mother/Daughter division, in each of their first three service games.

But the McCoys fought back for a break of their own. Katie struggled during the game, hitting several balls short into the net, but she and her mom managed to fight and push the game into deuce. Alex followed by hitting a shot into the net and sending one wide in the next two points, giving the McCoys their first and only game of the set. The Hammel sisters held serve their next game to take the set 6-1.

The Hammel sisters came back out to begin the second set just as dominating as the first, holding serve and then breaking the McCoys to go up 2-0. After each point, they could be seen laughing, joking and high-fiving each other while Katie became more frustrated each time she lost a ball into the net.

But she and her mom went on a run of their own. Down 30-15 in the third game, they managed to win three straight points to pull off their second break of the match. They followed it up by winning their first service game of the match to pull even 2-2.
