Latest round of realignment shakes up gridiron

ANDERSON, Ind. — For the third consecutive round of IHSAA realignment, the Anderson High School football team is headed to a new home.

Four years ago, the Indians briefly dipped down into Class 4A and shared a sectional with rivals Highland and Pendleton Heights.

Two years ago, after Highland was shuttered, AHS bounced back up into Class 5A.

This year the Tribe is staying put, narrowly missing the cut for the new super-school Class 6A, but the surroundings won’t be very familiar.

The IHSAA released its sectional lineups for 2013 through 2015 Monday, and no sport went through more local change than football.

Anderson now will compete in Sectional 13 alongside Decatur Central, Richmond, Zionsville and 10-time state champion Cathedral.

But the Indians aren’t the only team getting a new home.

Lapel moves up a class to 2A and joins a Sectional 36 lineup with a lot of local flavor. Competing against the Bulldogs are Madison County foes Alexandria, Frankton, Elwood and Madison-Grant. Bluffton, Eastern and Oak Hill round out the field.

Shenandoah, which claimed its first sectional title since 2004 last fall, will line up against Centerville, Heritage Christian, Broad Ripple, Scecina, Knightstown, Union County and Winchester in Sectional 38.

In other sports, the changes were more subtle.

Mount Vernon joins the Class 4A Sectional 9 field in boys basketball, girls basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball. The Marauders will compete against holdovers Anderson, Pendleton Heights, Connersville, Greenfield-Central, New Castle and Richmond. Yorktown will be included in the volleyball field after the Tigers moved up a class in that sport because of the IHSAA’s new success multiplier.

Teams that earn a certain number of points based on how far they advance in the postseason now will move up one class during each realignment cycle.

In Class 2A, Alexandria, Elwood and Madison-Grant will be paired with Eastern, Sheridan and Taylor in Sectional 39. Tipton also will be part of that field in boys basketball, girls basketball and volleyball.

Meanwhile, Frankton, Lapel and Shenandoah will match up with Muncie Burris, Wapahani and Winchester in a familiar-looking Sectional 40 lineup. Muncie Burris will not be part of that field in softball, and Wapahani’s volleyball team moved up to Class 3A because of the success multiplier.

Class A Sectional 55 features Daleville, Liberty Christian, Cowan, Monroe Central, Southern Wells and Wes-Del. That lineup remains solid in each sport except softball, where Cowan and Monroe Central will compete in Sectional 56 and be replaced by Tri-Central.

Soccer will return to the two-class system introduced two years ago.

Anderson and Pendleton Heights will compete against Fishers, Hamilton Southeastern and Noblesville in Class 2A Sectional 16 in both the boys and girls tournaments. Liberty Christian, which fields a coed team and competes only in the boys postseason, will take part in Class A Sectional 46 with Hamilton Heights, Muncie Burris, Sheridan and Wapahani.

This realignment cycle begins with the fall 2013 season and ends following the spring 2015 postseason.
