ANDERSON — Anderson University coach Tony Holloway and his staff have been named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Central Region Coaching Staff of the Year for the 2013 season.
“It was a great honor and says a lot about our program and the kids we have brought in that have bought into the program,” said Holloway. “We had a great season and that is because our kids played well, did everything we asked of them this season.”
The Ravens won the Trine Regional for the first time in school history, advancing to the NCAA Div. III National Championships in Eau Claire, Wisc. AU defeated No. 2 ranked Trine twice in the regional before knocking off Allegheny twice in the championship of the regional.
“We had a great run in the tournament and it was a great experience for our kids,” said assistant coach Justin Bates, who has been with the program for eight years. “Great players make coaches look good and our players did a great job of making us look good.”
The Ravens also won their third consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship and finished the season 31-18 overall. Anderson finished the season ranked No. 13 in the NFCA Top 25 poll. It was the first time in school history the school has been ranked in the NFCA Top 25 poll.
“It has been so exciting watching our team reach such heights this season,” said third-year assistant coach Mike Lee.
The Ravens had seven players on the All-HCAC team, led by conference MVP Amy Wuestefeld (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) and conference Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year Sami Frazier (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield).
Also making first time All-HCAC were Katy Ogden (Beech Grove, Ind./Beech Grove), Lauren Smith (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine), Yardley Collett (Middletown, Ind./Shenandoah), Katie Lee (Anderson, Ind./Highland) and Megan Ream (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee).
Holloway was also named HCAC Coach of the Year for the third straight season as AU went 12-4 in the conference this season before beating Manchester in the HCAC Tournament Championship game 5-1.
