Fall Creek rallies past APA

ANDERSON — Sterling Brideforth scored 15 of his game-high 31 points in the third quarter, and Fall Creek Academy overcame a 19-point deficit to send Anderson Preparatory Academy to its 10th straight loss Friday night.

Brideforth shot just 6-for-13 from the floor but sank 18 of 21 attempts at the free-throw line as the Engineers rallied for the 66-53 victory.

APA took a 32-13 lead midway through the second quarter on the strength of the perimeter shooting of Noah Long and Leo Harris. The pair combined to shoot 6-of-8 from 3-point range in the first half and score 27 points.

But Fall Creek scored the final seven points of the second quarter, and Brideforth took charge immediately after intermission. The junior swingman scored the first eight points of the third quarter to pull the Engineers within four at 32-28.

Long snapped the 15-0 run with a deep 3-pointer, but the Jets couldn't hold off the charge much longer.

Fall Creek took its first lead at 40-39 on a 3-pointer by freshman Jevell Jackson with 2:30 remaining in the period. Jonathan Barclay answered with a quick basket at the other end to put APA back in front, but Brideforth's two free throws moments later gave the Engineers the lead for good.

The game got messy in the fourth quarter when miscues with the scoreboard and game clock put Fall Creek on edge. When Javier Sowell fell to the ground claiming to have been on the receiving end of an APA elbow, tensions rose further.

With 32.8 seconds left, Fall Creek's Deylon Hunt shoved Long following a scuffle for a loose ball. Both players were assessed technical fouls, receiving their fifth personals and fouling out of the game.

Long led the Jets with 26 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-10 from 3-point range. Harris, making his 2013-14 debut, added 12 points but scored just one in the second half.

Sowell joined Brideforth in double figures with 12 points for Fall Creek (4-5).

The Jets won the rebounding battle 42-30 but turned the ball over 30 times, including 16 in the second half.

APA (0-10) travels to Lapel next Friday.
