Oak Hill holds on for CIC crown

ELWOOD — The third time was the charm Wednesday night as the Central Indiana Conference wrestling teams were finally able to hold their conference tournament after weather forced two previous delays.

Coming into the tournament, Oak Hill had dominated CIC matches this year. The Golden Eagles defeated the other seven teams in the conference by an average of 70.8-6.8 and shut out Madison-Grant, Mississinewa and Blackford. But on this night, the competition was stiff and spirited. The Golden Eagles won the most championships (seven) and claimed the team title, but there were also some upsets. Elwood won three titles, Frankton had two and Alexandria and Eastbrook each scored one win.

Frankton went two for two early as Garrett Allen won the 106-pound title and Cance Carpenter won the 120-pound class.

“I wrestled him (Logan McCormick) before so I knew what was going to happen,” said Allen, who won by pin over his Elwood opponent at the :32 mark.

“That’s Garrett Allen’s third conference championship,” Frankton coach Courtney Duncan said.

Carpenter’s win over Alexandria’s Leyton Peavler was a close 14-12 decision.

“It’s always been a back and forth match all the time,” Duncan said of the Peavler/Carpenter match.

To make things even more interesting, the two will square off Saturday in the sectionals at Hamilton Heights.

Elwood’s wins included Dakota Cole with a 6-4 decision in the 126-pound class, Bady Hawes pinned Oak Hill’s Shane Curtis to win the 138-pound division and TJ Scott won the 145-pound division. Scott defeated Frankton’s Bryce Mallernee in the first round and pinned Blackford’s Chris Wickline to advance to the final against Oak Hill’s Brady Hardcastle. Scott jumped to an early lead on Hardcastle and nearly won by injury as Hardcastle hurt his shoulder. Hardcastle continued, but Scott nabbed a very popular victory. During the match, several members of each team had to be separated by coaches and meet officials.

Alexandria’s Nate Ryan moved his record to 26-2 on the season with a 14-5 decision in the 152-pound class over Oak Hill’s Riley Johnson.

In the 170-pound class, Elwood’s Sammy Mireles dropped an 8-6 decision to Eastbrook’s Luke Elliott. Oak Hill finished off the evening by winning the final four weight classes.
