Kelly leads Alex to rout of Wes-Del

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — The Alexandria Tigers opened the season with a 31–6 win over the Wes-Del Warriors on Friday night at Alexandria High School.

The Tigers opened a 10-0 lead in the first quarter with a safety as the center snap sailed over the Wes-Del punter’s head into the end zone.

Soon after, Blaize Kelly hit Drew Johnson with a 31-yard touchdown pass. The tw- point conversion was good, and Alex led 10-0.

In the second quarter, Kelly threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Mason Hoke on a fourth-and-12 play for an 18-0 halftime lead.

The Warriors opened the second half with a decent drive but came up empty when quarterback

Trevor Spencer fumbled a snap and the ball was recovered by Alex’s Jacob Thurston.

After the Tigers turned the ball over on downs, Devin Gill gave Wes-Del hope with a 55-yard, third-quarter touchdown run, but the Tigers’ Bryan Carter returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and a 24-6 lead.

The score dashed any hope Wes-Del had of making a comeback.

“It took the air out of them (Wes Del),” Alexandria coach Pete Gast said. “Obviously there was a little bit of life, but that kickoff brought all the momentum back to us.”

Wes-Del did not threaten again, and Carter scored the final touchdown on a 31-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Defense was a point of emphasis for Gast coming into the game, and for the most part the coach was happy with it.

“I was wanting us to play good defense, and I felt we played good defense,” Gast said. “It’s going to be a tough conference (Central Indiana Conference). In order to be competitive in it, we’re going to have to play good defense.”

The Tigers (1-0) travel to Wabash next week.
