Shelbyville shuts down Arabians' attack

PENDLETON, Ind. — The Pendleton Heights football team learned a tough French lesson on Friday night.

Shelbyville's DeShaun French rushed for 197 yards and three touchdowns as the Golden Bears defeated the Arabians 38-21 in a Hoosier Heritage Conference contest. He also added an 85-yard kickoff return for another score and finished with more than 300 all-purpose yards.

“We have to do a better job of tackling,” said Pendleton Heights coach John Broughton. “Defensively, we did a nice job on first and second down, but then they had a couple of big gains.”

Jesse Furrow led the Arabians with 225 yards passing, completing 22 of 38 attempts, including a 45-yard TD to Chandler Wilson. Furrow also had two touchdowns rushing, including a 47-yard score.

“The only life we had was in the air,” said Broughton. “We got behind in the second half, and we had to throw the football. We just never got anything going offensively, and Jesse was under pressure all night.”

Eren Davis led the receiving corps with nine catches for 59 yards, and Wilson finished with five receptions for a team-high 111 yards. Brandon Riggs added five catches for 43 yards, and Chris Clemmons chipped in with three receptions for 12 yards.

Shelbyville had a 350-332 advantage in total offense, including 254-107 on the ground.

“We have to find something positive to build on, and right now it’s hard to find something,” said Broughton. “Right now we are going back to square one. We had a long talk in the locker room, but we’re not going to give up. We have to get better, and we have to do the best we can.”

Pendleton Heights (2-2, 0-2 HHC) travels to Mount Vernon next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
