Cathedral ends Anderson's season

LAWRENCE, Ind. — A week after picking up their first sectional win since 1992, the Anderson Indians lined up Friday night against Indianapolis Cathedral for the sectional 13 title.

Playing on the Lawrence Central High School field, the Irish used a 21-point outburst in the first quarter to blow the game open and cruised to a 56-13 win over Anderson.

Anderson was competing for their first-ever sectional title while Cathedral was going for their 18th overall sectional title and eighth in a row. The Irish took the opening kickoff and moved quickly into Anderson territory but a fumble by Zach Saum was recovered by Alonzo West to end the threat.

Anderson moved the ball to midfield but was forced to punt. The Irish went 52 yards in three plays, taking only 57 seconds to find the end zone when Caleb Cross scored from 10 yards out.

On the ensuing possession, Kyle Hoeper picked up a fumble and ran for a 20-yard score to give Cathedral a 14-0 lead. Anderson quarterback Gaven Owens threw an interception on the first play and Cathedral struck quickly as Cross went in from 24 yards out to put the Irish up 21-0.

The burst took 1:14. The Irish put three more touchdowns on the board in the first half as Cross scored his third TD on the night with 2:51 gone in the second quarter, Evan Christopher scored on a 5-yard run and Venton Curry ended the barrage with a 14-yard touchdown run with 9 seconds left in the half for a 42-0 Irish lead.

Anderson got on the board in the third quarter as Owens hit Brandon Chapman with a short pass that turned into a 62-yard touchdown. Chapman broke two tackles at the Cathedral 40 yard line, running backwards for about 5 yards before breaking free.

Cathedral put two touchdowns on the board to take a 56-7 lead in the fourth quarter before Indian tailback Tyler Welch sprinted down the left sideline for an 80-yard touchdown run to finish the scoring for Anderson. Cathedral outgained Anderson 428-234 for the game, including 306 yards on the ground.  Welch finished with 127 yards on the ground while Owens had 107 yards passing for Anderson. The Indians finish the year 4-7.
