Tipton pulls away from Argylls

Madison-Grant girls lose 59-33

FAIRMOUNT, Ind. — The Tipton Lady Devils used a stifling defense to fuel a 29-4 second quarter on their way to a 59-33 win at Madison-Grant Friday night.

“That was the first time we went to that hybrid 1-3-1 (zone) and we left some gaps in it early on,” said Tipton coach Nick Comer, “We’re really young so we still had some early-game jitters.”

Madison-Grant took advantage of those gaps, scoring the only two field goals they would get in the first half to come back from a 9-0 deficit and end the first quarter with Tipton leading 11-6.

“As the half wore on,” Comer said, “we were able to get more deflections, which allowed our athletes to get out in transition and run.” Tipton forced Madison-Grant into 30 turnovers, including 13 during the second quarter.

Junior Lela Crawford led Tipton with a game-high 22 points and added four rebounds. “We got transition baskets, so that helped a lot,” Crawford said after the game, “I really liked that we shared the ball and got it moving.”

“When we do that, we have fun,”said Kacie Juday, the Lady Devils’ other junior co-captain. “Our defense was turned up. We worked really hard.” Juday had 14 points, nine of them during Tipton’s second-quarter run. She led the team with five rebounds.

Senior guard Kaycie Pyle had nine points to lead the Argylls and took down four rebounds, three of them on the offensive boards. Bethani Herniak had a game-high six rebounds and chipped in three points for M-G.

Freshman Macie Lively hit 4-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc, 1-for-2 from 2-point range and made both of the free-throws she attempted to register 16 points for Tipton. Kayla Martin made a 3-pointer and 4-of-8 free throws to garner seven points for Madison-Grant.

Madison-Grant fall to 1-2 and will play at Wabash on Tuesday.
