Panthers pounce on Jets

ELWOOD, Ind. — A flat second half for Anderson Preparatory Academy’s boys and girls basketball teams led to an Elwood sweep Saturday in the first round of the Madison County Basketball Tournament.

The girls started off Saturday night’s action, and the Jets (3-7) led most of the first quarter before Elwood (9-3) knotted things up at 8-8.

The Panthers gave themselves some breathing room in the second quarter behind the hot shooting of Katelyn Leisure. She poured in seven of her team’s 17 second-quarter points and gave her team a 25-17 lead at the half.

The Panthers outscored Anderson Prep 38-7 in the second half as they breezed through to the second round with a 63-24 victory.

“It was a team effort,” Panthers coach Tom Kessinger said. “I just keep thinking about the third quarter. We just kind of got through the first half. It wasn’t the prettiest thing. Sometimes that happens.”

The boys’ game went much the same way as the girls for the Jets as a one-point deficit turned into a 59-43 loss to Elwood.

APA used its quickness and athleticism to its advantage in the first half and trailed by one point at the end of both the first and second quarters, but the Panthers left it all on the floor in the final 16 minutes by outscoring their opponent 32-17.

“I thought we played very timid, very kind of scared to make a pass, shoot the basketball, to kind of do anything in the first half, which I don’t understand,” said Elwood coach Corey Jackson.

He felt like the play of Jared Bourff was one of the big differences in the game with the Panthers’ other big body, Anthony Bennett, in foul trouble for much of the game.

Bourff scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the second half.
