Bearcats stifle Alexandria

Muncie defeats Tigers girls 48-31

ALEXANDRIA, Ind. — Muncie Central forced turnovers and poor shooting on its foe here Friday and roughed up Alexandria 48-31.

The Tigers hit only 11-of-43 from the field and had 26 turnovers and both of those numbers prevented the home team from challenging the Bearcats throughout much of the contest.

“We were just mentally out of it,” said Alexandria coach Tina Bolte. “We flat out didn’t deserve the win. We had poor execution.”

None of the Tigers scored in double figures. Peyton and Paxton Quinn each had eight points and Shanna Kelly added seven. Each also led the team in rebounds with six apiece.

Jessica Rowe led all scorers with 18 points and rebounders with 11 for the Bearcats. She hit 8 of her 10 shots, many of them coming directly from her seven offensive rebounds. Freshman Jayla Scaife hit 7-of-11 from the field to finish with 14.

“Muncie Central really worked hard,” said Bolte. “They got after us. (Scaife) is just bubbling with potential. She’s going to be a great player.”

Alexandria’s Desirae Litchfield had the difficult task of guarding Scaife for much of the game. “I thought Desirae did everything we ask of her tonight,” said Bolte. “She did a good job.”

Alexandria is now 0-2 after opening the season at home with a loss to Yorktown.

“I don’t think there was mucxh difference in our effort between this game and the Yorktown game,” said Bolte. “I know tonight we didn’t hit as many shots. We just didn’t shoot the ball well at all.”

Central’s quickness in the man-to-man defense kept Alexandria from penetrating and forced the Tigers into taking 16 shots from 3-point range. They hit just one.

The Tigers missed several shots inside, many of them coming off the 14 offensive rebounds. At 6-foot and with considerable leaping ability, Scaife appeared to bother the Alexandria shooters in close.

“I told them to keep their heads up to look for her,” said Bolte.

Alexandria continues its season-opening, four-game homestand on Wednesday with a game against Lapel (1-0).
