1A Preview: Liberty Christian looks for repeat title

ANDERSON, Ind. — A year ago, Liberty Christian was just beginning its drive to a first boys basketball sectional title.

This year, the Lions (16-5) will be making the trip to Monroe Central with a group of seniors who were part of that. So the experience should account for something, right?

Liberty Christian coach Jason Chappell isn’t so sure.

“This is the first time we’ve ever had a chance to repeat a sectional title,” he said. “We are going in there blind. I know there are no guarantees. I’ve seen some unique things happen in the game of basketball.”

The Lions will play in the opening game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday against Daleville, a team Liberty defeated 88-30 on Feb. 16.

Liberty is on a bit of an upswing, winning the last three games. “Frankton humbled us,” said Chappell of his team’s 79-57 loss at the hands of the Eagles. “Losses sometimes will help. I do get the feeling that we’ve made a nice turn the past few weeks.

Sophomore Chris Nunn leads Liberty in scoring with a 15.1 average. Junior Preston Quinn is right behind at 13.6. Quinn also leads the team on the boards, getting nearly seven rebounds per outing.

The only downside for the Lions is the loss of senior Austin Castor. “He broke his leg in a game three or four weeks ago,” said Chappell. “I’ve missed seeing him on the court.”

The Lions have only played two of their sectional foes (also Cowan) and beaten them both. That isn’t an area that Daleville can look toward for encouragement. The Broncos have played all of their sectional opponents and lost to all of them.

Daleville is 3-17 on the season.

The Broncos have five seniors. One of them, James Tungate, is one of the team’s top scorers. That’s also true of sophomore Bryce Stephens.

The winner of the game between Liberty Christian and Daleville will play Friday at 6 p.m. against Monroe Central. The championship will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
