Third-ranked Marietta sweeps AU baseball

XENIA, Ohio — The Anderson University baseball team dropped a pair of games to No. 3 ranked and defending national champion Marietta College on Monday at Grady’s Field.

The Pioneers won the first game 4-3 in 10 innings and defeated the Ravens 7-3 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Dan Schmitz got a no-decision, allowing four hits and no runs over six innings while striking out four. He left the game with a 3-0 lead, but the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead.

AU scored three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead, getting an RBI hit by Cole Heberling and a two-run double by Austin Young.

Marietta scored the winning run on an infield single after a leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt and a groundout. AU got its leadoff runner on in the home half of the 10th but couldn’t advance him.

Young and Heberling led the Raven offense with two hits each, and Jordan Ball had a pinch-hit double in the seventh inning.

In the second game, AU once again took the lead with two runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Young and a sacrifice fly by Jacob Craft.

Marietta responded with three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take control of the game. The Ravens helped the Pioneers’ cause with five errors in the contest.

Tyler Watson took the loss, allowing five runs — two earned — on four hits in four innings of work. Jake Eaton and Dane DeWitt each allowed one run in relief and Mark Garrett tossed 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball to finish the game.

AU outhit Marietta 10-7 in the second game, led by Ball’s two hits and two runs scored. Connor Morris and Zach Garcia had two hits each, and Young and Craft each had a hit and an RBI.

AU (1-3) plays a doubleheader against Benedictine in Auburndale, Fla., on Mar. 16 at 3 p.m.
