INGALLS — Police released the identity of an Indianapolis woman who was struck by a train and killed in Ingalls on Wednesday night.

Amber Louise Kates, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, the railway tracks at the intersection of Alfont Road and Indiana 67, according to a press release from the Madison County Sheriff's Department.

Shortly before 9 p.m., the county crash team was called to the intersection to investigate the car-train crash.

"Evidence from the scene, along with witness statements, indicates (Kates) was traveling southbound on Alfont Road when she drove around the railroad crossing arm and got her vehicle stuck on the railroad tracks," the release said.

Witnesses reported that Kates left her vehicle, a 2003 Oldsmobile, in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid being struck by the train.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the press release.
