On June 27, 2008, the Lord called our Mother Luvenia Ann Watson home at Saint John’s Medical Center.
Luvenia A. Watson was born March 8, 1928, in Talladega, Ala., to Newt and Mary Elizabeth Richardson. She was educated in the Talladega community school system. She gave her life to Christ at an early age. Her family donated the land for their home church Morning Star Baptist Church in Talladega, Ala.
She moved to Anderson in the late 1940s and was joined in marriage to the late Columbus Watson. From that union, they had 15 children. She was retired from Anderson Community Schools, where she was a custodian. She was also co-founder of The Pittt Bar B Que and Grill on the Point in Anderson.
Her brothers and sisters affectionately called her “Hedi.” She loved the Lord and her family. She valued each and every one of her children and grandchildren. She was an avid gardener and loved fishing. Her cooking and special recipes for southern dishes are still held in high regards by family and friends. She was loved by a great number of people around the country and will be greatly missed.
She leaves to cherish her memory, Lucille (Peter) Yates of Indianapolis, Minnie (Robert) Roddy of Anderson, Mary (George) Davis of Indianapolis, Charlene Davis, Bill (Aundrea) Watson, Cardell Watson and Doretha McCullough, all of Anderson, Lisa Cooper of Indianapolis, John (Dorothy) Watson, Guydell Watson, and Stephanie Watson, all of Anderson, and Terry (Zonaerae’) of Killeen, Texas; stepchildren, Columbus Cardell Watson of Anderson and Dixie Brown of Gary. She also leaves to cherish her memory special grandchildren, Deputy Jamilia Leal of Long Beach, Calif., Africa Berry, Willie Watson II, Amber Rochelle Watson, Tiffany Roberts, Krystal Davis, Dennis (Jaqueline) Watson, Adreonnia Watson and Andre Majors, all of Anderson, that she raised, and 19 other grandchildren. Each grandchild, great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild held a special place in her heart and will miss her dearly. She will also be missed by her special godson, Lewis McCorkle; in-laws, L.C. Watson, Anderson, Willie James (Doris) Watson, Erlyene, Catherine Watson of Chicago, Ill., and Cecelia Nunn of Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Columbus Watson; two daughters, Attee and Rosie Watson; an infant son; her parents, Newt and Mary Elizabeth Richardson; 11 of her siblings; and two grandchildren.
The Watson family would like to give a special thank-you to Saint John’s Health System and the Indiana Dialysis Institute of Indiana for the care of our mother.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Greater Light Apostolic Church, 317 Marine Drive, Anderson with the Revs. Michael Johnson and Fred McGhee officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
