Derwood Ernest Kuhn

Nov. 16, 1915 - July 30, 2013

ANDERSON -- Derwood Ernest Kuhn, 97, of Anderson, passed away July 30, 2013 at Community Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 16, 1915, in Cumberland County, Ill. He was the ninth child of a family of 12 children, born to John and Mattie O. (House) Kuhn. He was raised on a farm and attended Yanaway local school and graduated from Casey High School in Clark County, Ill.

He served 3¾ years in the European Theater of Operation as a member of the 101st Signal Co. of the 101st Airborne Division as T4 radio operator. After he was discharged from service, he was a movie projectionist for eight years. In 1953, he moved to Anderson and became a laborer for Guide Lamp Division of General Motors, retiring after 26 years.

Derwood was a ham radio operator and enjoyed hunting, reading, fly fishing and fly tying.

He is survived by two daughters, Valli Blevins of Markleville and Linda Kay (Charles) Shields of Daleville; grandchildren, Bobbi Barnett of McCordsville, Sonny Blevins of Markleville, Carma (Matt) Schlabach, Panama City, Fla., Tori Rea of Panama City Beach, Fla., Darby Baldwin and Patricia Terry, both of Daleville, Cindy (Richard) Ballard of Fortville, Andy McNeal of Indianapolis, Joseph Terry of Chesterfield, and Sean’a (Curt) Matthews of Daleville; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews in Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 11 brothers and sisters; and wife, Gladys (Terry) Kuhn.

Services will be conducted at noon Friday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Mendon Cemetery in Pendleton with military graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 266.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
