ANDERSON — Oliver Brooks Jr., 83, took his final rest, after a brief illness, on Jan. 3, 2014.
He was born Jan. 15, 1930, in Itta Bena, Miss., to Oliver Brooks Sr. and Annie (Collins) Brooks (birth mother) and Hattie (Seal) Brooks. He was a Civil Defense Officer and was employed with General Motors for more than 30 years until his retirement.
Oliver gave his life to Christ at an early age and became a faithful member of Anderson Zion Baptist Church where he sang with the Male Chorus. He was not a man of many words, but his kindness, generosity and tender heart were felt by all who encountered him.
Oliver is survived by his former wife and best friend, Queen Victoria (Kershaw) Brooks; twin sister, Annie Williams and brother, John Brooks (Anderson); sister-in-law, Mary Frances Brooks (Robbinsdale, Minn.); three sons, David (Vanessa) Brooks Sr., Ronnie Brooks (Anderson) and Phillip Clark (Indianapolis); five daughters, Paulette (Jeffrey) Chatman, Rachel (Brennen) Steele, Marquirite Brooks (Anderson), Ashley Mitchell and Abony Mitchell (Indianapolis); daughters-in-law, Betty Brooks (Muncie), Cheryl Brooks and Delphine Brooks (Anderson); 29 grandchildren, Robert (Bridget) Brooks Jr., Lynn (William) Lee, Jai Brooks (Muncie), Candid Camille Arthur, Trena (Julius) Hardy, Vonka Boulware (Anderson), David Brooks Jr. (Alabama), Flearadysha Brooks (Indianapolis), Angel (James) Combs (Anderson), Jada Williams (San Francisco, Calif.), Stevie Wilson, Michael Watson, Rufus “Dino” Brooks, Samuel Brooks, Jeffrey Chatman Jr., Je’Quise Chatman, Deja Brooks, Quinn Brooks, Nika McCloud, Bryesha McCullough, J’essence Reynolds, Bree Steele, Olivia Brooks (Anderson), Tionna Armstrong, Ta-Niyah Armstrong, Ta-Naja Mitchell, Jamony Wilson, Anthony Wilson (Indianapolis) and Harmony Clark (Kokomo); also 45 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and other close relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Brooks Sr., Annie Brooks and Hattie Brooks; sisters, Mary Hopgood, Minnie Booker and Rosie Brooks; brother, Jester Brooks; sons, Robert Brooks, Willie Brooks and Jackie Brooks; sister-in-law, Bernice Brooks; and brothers-in-law, Joseph A.D. Hopgood, Sr. and Mose Booker.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at Community Hospital Anderson and the staff at Fresenius Dialysis Medical Care.
Services will be held Saturday at noon at Anderson Zion Baptist Church, 2008 Rev. J.T. Menifee St., Anderson, with Pastor Marlon Collins, Pastor Tyrone Vertner officiating and Dr. Horace Brooks eulogizing.
Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the church.
