LAPEL — Roberta Maxine “Berta” Barker, 82, Lapel, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Community Hospital of Anderson following a brief illness.
She was born on Nov. 13, 1931, in Anderson, to Jona and Laura (Sparks) Scott.
She graduated from Markleville High School in 1950.
Roberta provided child care in her home for many children for more than 30 years.
She was a member of the East Lynn Christian Church in Anderson and had been active in bowling. She served as secretary/treasurer of the Thursday 50 Plus League and the Monday Senior League at Cooper’s Sport Bowl in Anderson.
When her boys were young, she served as secretary/treasurer of the Lapel Baseball League. Her favorite job, though, was being a grandmother.
She is survived by three sons, Kip (wife, Ann) Barker of Fort Wayne, Phil (wife, Colleen) Barker of Middletown, and Richard Barker of Lapel; four grandchildren, Holly (husband, Jason) Cannaday of Anderson, Andrew (wife, Leslie) Barker of Pendleton, and Emily and Lilly Barker, both of Fort Wayne; three great-grandchildren, Kathryn, Kyle, and Kimberly Cannaday; and one sister, Martha Hundley of Middletown.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 52 years, William Louis “Bill” Barker; and two brothers, Julius Keith and Jona Lorane Scott.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Scott E. Hersberger Funeral Home, 1010 N. Main St., Lapel, with the Rev. Susan Cameron officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Lapel.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
