Charles J. ‘Chuck’ Copher

Aug. 4, 1930 - April 2, 2013

ELWOOD, Ind. — Charles J. “Chuck” Copher, 82 a lifelong resident of Elwood, died peacefully in his sleep on April 2, 2013, at Community Parkview Care Center in Elwood following an extended illness.

Born on Aug. 4, 1930, to J. Everett and Dolly (Fesler) Copher, he was a licensed funeral director, and former owner of Copher & Fesler Funeral Home in Elwood. He was a 1948 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School and later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, working in the Special Intelligence Division. He married Roberta J. “Bobbie” Hoover on Feb. 25, 1951. Following his service in the Army, he and his wife returned to Elwood, and he attended the Indiana School of Mortuary Science in order to help his mother and brother, Phil Copher, run their growing family funeral home.

Chuck will always be remembered for the exceptional care that he provided to families in need, through many years of both ambulance service and funeral service for the Elwood community. He was a member of the Elwood Kiwanis Club, the American Legion, and the Madison County Funeral Directors Association.

Chuck was a perfectionist in everything he performed.  As a car enthusiast, he enjoyed washing and waxing cars — both at the funeral home as well as his personal collection at home. He also enjoyed plowing snow for many years with his Ford Bronco for various businesses, neighbors, and friends. Chuck was known for having a great sense of humor and could be quite the prankster at times. In recent years, he enjoyed taking drives with his dog “Katie” and visiting his favorite restaurant on a regular basis — Mr. Happy Burger.

He is survived by two children, Thomas J. (wife, Debbie) Copher, Elwood; daughter, Jane Copher of Indianapolis and Elwood; sister-in-law, Marty Copher, Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

Chuck was preceded in death by parents; his beloved wife of 57 years, Roberta J. “Bobbie” Copher, who died in 2008; and three brothers, J. Phil Copher of Elwood, Jack Copher of Chicago, Ill., and Dr. David Copher of Indianapolis.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with his longtime friend, the Rev. William Mathys, officiating. Burial will take place in the Elwood City Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be from noon to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral on Saturday at the funeral home.
