LAKE PLACID, Fla. —
Edward “Dale” Hensley, 79, of Lake Placid, Fla., and Anderson, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at the Sebring Florida hospital.
He was born March 3, 1934, in Arkansas to his parents, Lowell and Eunice (Healey) Hensley.
Dale, at age 13, moved to Anderson with his parents and four younger brothers in 1947. He married Mae “Dean” (Payton) Hensley in Anderson on March 13, 1953. They had two children, Mark “Duke” (Cathy) Hensley and Terry “Dusty” (Elverie) Hensley.
Dale worked at Guide Lamp and his wife, Dean, worked at Delco Remy. They both retired from General Motors after 30 years of service and retired to Lake Placid, Fla.
Dale was very active, prior to, and in the factory during his working years. He coached and played basketball and fast-pitch softball for many years in Anderson. Dale was respected and liked by all who met and knew him. He served on numerous committees and participated in many fundraising activities. He was a UAW Local 663 member. He was nominated and elected to many union offices; he never lost an election.
Dale, in his later years, coached and played slow-pitch softball in Anderson and Lake Placid, Fla. He was one of the founders of the Lake Placid Slow Pitch Softball League (55 and over at the time). He played in the league until he was 70 years old. Dale was also very active in square dancing in his retirement years in Lake Placid.
Dale will be remembered by his loving family, wife, “Dean;” sons, “Duke” (Cathy) and “Dusty” (Elverie) in Lake Placid; brothers, Jim (Judy) and Ray (Diane) in Anderson; brothers and sisters-in-law, O.L. Payton (Mildred) of Arkansas, Sylvia (Russ) Marling of Florida, Wandavee (Bob) Morphew and Ella Faye (Don, deceased) Teague, all of Anderson; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Dale also had five cherished grandchildren, Shane, Jason (deceased), Eric (Amber), Monica and Kylie Hensley; six cherished great-grandchildren, Brody, Gracie, Rylan and Emma Hensley, Ashton Hannah and Quinten Carey, all in the immediate area around Anderson.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bob and Carl; and grandson, Jason Hensley.
There will not be a service and the family requests no flowers. He will be cremated as he requested.
