SUMMITVILLE — Charles D. Whitaker, 86, Summitville, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Community Hospital in Anderson following a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 7, 1927, in Arkansas, to William and Nanny (Hall) Whitaker. He has lived in the Alexandria-Summitville area for several years. Charles worked at Johns-Manville, formerly of Alexandria, for eight years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and wood crafting.
He is survived by special friend and longtime companion, Mary Bow of Alexandria; four sons, Gerald (Connie) Whitaker, Dewight (Linda) Whitaker and Kenny Whitaker, all of Summitville, and Charles W. (Lori) Whitaker of Fowlerton; two daughters, Maedean (Jack) Knepp and Trish (Terry) Brewer, all of Big Sandy, Tenn.; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Diane Thompson; and three sisters, Lorraine Moore, Jessie Lane Smith and Betty Gillette
Services honoring Charles’ life will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday at Owens-Noffze Funeral Home, 1009 W. Walnut St., Summitville, with the Rev. Edsel Joyner officiating.
Friends may call at the Owens-Noffze Funeral Home Summitville after 11 a.m. on Thursday prior to the service. Interment will follow in Vinson Memorial Cemetery in Summitville.
