ANDERSON — Robert J. “Hoppie” Hopkins, 90, Anderson, passed away Sept. 15, 2013, at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 13, 1922, in Anderson, the son of the late William and Ruth (Tillett) Hopkins, and was a lifelong Anderson resident. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School and attended one year at Denver University. He spent many years employed at the Anderson Speedway as the public relations manager.
Robert was a sports fan and enjoyed playing golf. He had been a member of the American Legion, VFW, Voiture 40 & 8 and Anderson Eagles.
He served in the U.S. Army in the European theater as part of the Rainbow Division during World War II.
He is survived by his daughters, Olivia Tiller of Anderson and Sally (Ron) Shields of Alexandria; stepdaughter, Kay Lynn Kleinschmidt of Mt. Carmel, Ill.; grandchildren, Andrea (William) Eldon, Amy (James) McQueary, Stacey (Gerardo) Balderrama, Kevin Shields, Jason Shields and Scott (Nikki) Shields; 12 great-grandchildren; and brother, Bill Hopkins of Muncie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Margaret Hopkins.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Werling officiating. Burial will be at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 266.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service.
