ELWOOD — James Richard “Zip” Davis, 85, who was a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away on Friday, Oct. 25, 2013, at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital.

Zip was born on Sept. 15, 1928, in Elwood to the late Thomas and Silvia (Balser) Davis. Zip graduated from Elwood High School in 1947. On July 12, 1948, he married the love of his life, Jane (Ring) Davis; they had been married for 65 years.

Anyone who wanted to catch up on the latest sporting events could come into Zip’s Barber Shop on Saturday mornings to discuss the games. Zip was very instrumental in starting the Little League Baseball program in Elwood, where he served as treasurer for many years. Zip and Jane could always be found in the Elwood stands supporting the Panther teams.

Zip is survived by his loving family, wife, Jane (Ring) Davis of Elwood; two sons, Joe and wife Beth Davis of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Andy Davis of Elwood; grandchildren, Miles Davis, Mitch Davis, Brett (Maria) Davis, Chadd (Regan) Davis, and Bristyn Davis; great-grandchildren, Grant Davis, West Davis, Ava Davis, and Ezra Davis.

Zip was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ted Davis; two brothers; and two sisters.
