---- — ELWOOD — Royal C. Harrison Jr., 85, of Elwood, passed away June 22, 2013, at Community Hospital, Anderson, after a lengthy illness.
He was born April 1, 1928, in Elwood, to Royal and Kathryn (Pavese) Harrison. He retired from Continental Can Corp. in 1988.
Royal was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church and the Bykota Sunday school class. He was also a member of the Elwood Elks 368. Royal was an avid sports fan of all his grandchildren and attended all of their sporting events. He also loved to sit and reminisce about the past with his grandchildren. Royal was an adult helper at Oakland Cafeteria, where he got to know a lot of children.
He married Phyllis Sizelove on June 18, 1948, and she survives. He is also survived by three children, Garry (Debra) Harrison of Chino Valley, Ariz., Randy Harrison of O’Fallon, Mo., and Denise (Bill) Kessinger of Elwood; a sister, Chiquela McGuire of Elwood; two brothers, Gene (Dana) Harrison of Newton, Kan., and Robert (Millie) Harrison of Frankton; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Zachary and Sabrina Harrison, Aaron (Angie) Harrison and Lyndsy Harrison, Billy (Jenny) Kessinger and Tom and Kristi Kessinger; and great-grandchildren, Dylan, Kylie and Jillian Harrison and Grace and Blake Kessinger.
Royal was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Joseph Ross Swafford; brother-in-law, William McGuire; and a daughter-in-law, Karen Harrison.
Friends will be received at the First Missionary Baptist Church, 420 S. Anderson St., Elwood, from 4 to 8 p.m. today.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastor Joshua Carney officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in Royal’s memory to First Missionary Baptist Church, the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
The care of Mr. Harrison was entrusted to the Jackley-Landrum Funeral Home, Elwood.
