ALEXANDRIA, Ind. —
Elmer M. Wiegert Jr., 88, passed away June 29, 2013, at Alexandria Care Center, after a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Elwood, the son of Elmer M. Wiegert and Edna (Tharp) Wiegert . He resided in the Elwood/Alexandria area all of his lifetime.
Elmer served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II, in Central Europe. He was the recipient of five bronze battle stars and was honorably discharged in 1945.
He retired in 1979 as a computer programmer at Delco-Remy Div. of General Motors, formerly of Anderson, after 35 years of employment.
He was a member of Alexandria Masonic Lodge 235, where he was Past Worshipful Master. He was also a member of Murat Shrine-Valley of Indianapolis; Alexandria Elks Lodge 478; long-time member of Alexandria Eagles 1771, where he was a past president; and belonged to Elwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5782; Frankton American Legion and Anderson AMVETS.
Survivors include his cousin and caregiver, Patricia (Dick) Baker of Alexandria; four stepchildren, Kenny (Jeannie) Bowers and Chris (Sharon) Bowers, all of Elkhart, Cindy (Mel) McDaniel of Pendleton and Karen Hayes of Alexandria; eight stepgrandchildren; 18 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Irene (Grega) Wiegert, who passed away in 2007.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Noffze Funeral Home, 501 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, officiated by Chaplain Matt Miller. Interment will follow at Park View Cemetery, Alexandria, where military graveside honors will be provided by the U.S. Army, Elwood VFW-American Legion Honor Guard.
Friends may call after 11 a.m., prior to the Tuesday service, at the funeral home.
