J.A. Cummins

Aug. 7, 1948 - April 18, 2013

MUNCIE, Ind. — J.A. Cummins, 64, passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening, April 18, 2013, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

He was born on Aug. 7, 1948, in Takoma Park, Md., the son of Marion and Ruthanna (Petry) Cummins, moved to Muncie in 1952 and graduated from Cowan High School in 1966. He received his bachelor’s degree of science from Ball State University, received his degree of Juris Doctor from Ohio Northern University in 1977, and passed the bar and started practicing law in 1977.

He was an attorney for 33 years, serving 14 years as a defense attorney, seven years as a public defender, and 15 years as chief deputy prosecutor. J.A. owned and operated his own law practice for 16 years, was chief deputy prosecutor from 1991 to 2006, prosecuting attorney for the Juvenile Court from 1991 to 2006, ran for Delaware County Prosecutor and won the primary in 2010. He was also senior prosecutor for Madison and Hamilton counties from 2006 to 2010. He retired from the practice of law in December 2010.

He was an accomplished sailor and won several National Hobie Cat Sailboat regattas in the 1970s (one of which was in the Atlantic Ocean), and enjoyed windsurfing. He was also a member of the Prairie Creek Sailing Club and was vice commodore in the 1970s, running the committee boat for sailboat races. J.A. received level one from Parelli Natural Horsemanship in 2003 and received level two Parelli Natural Horsemanship in 2005. He became a two-star Parelli instructor in 2011 and passed level three Parelli Natural Horsemanship. He owned and operated Two Hawk Stable starting in 1996. J.A. also was an avid golfer.

He was appointed as legal counsel for the Board of Sanitary Commissioners. He also ran for State Representative District 34 in 1984. J.A. was a member of the Chanta Clair Club and president of Delaware County Young Democrats.

He advised, directed, and gave moral support to his nephews, nieces, and many young people.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Shelly; his sister, Barbara Lee (husband, Wayne), Wapakoneta, Ohio; a brother, Norman Cummins (wife, Lynn), Pendleton; four sisters-in-law, Nancy Cummins, Muncie, Lynn Adams-Landon (husband, Brock), Englewood, Colo., Etta Alexander (husband, Mick), Muncie, and Diane A. Akert (husband, Walt), Leicaster, N.C.; many beloved nieces and nephews; six horses; and three cats.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Michael Cummins.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with his nephew Rev. Lawrence Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Jones Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour before services Thursday at the mortuary.
