A. Dale Michael

Jan. 30, 1926 – May 1, 2013

PENDLETON, Ind. — A. Dale Michael, 87, passed away May 1, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born Jan. 30, 1926 in Anderson. Dale graduated from Pendleton High School in 1944 after earning nine athletic letters (three each in basketball, baseball and track) and serving three years as class president. He enlisted in the Naval Air Force, entering the service July 1, 1944, and spent one year at DePauw University in Officer Training School. He received tarmac training at Norman (Okla.) Naval Air Station then transferred to Iowa Preflight School. Dale elected to leave the service following the end of World War II. He completed his B.S. degree in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University in 1949 and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Following graduation he was employed three years as Bartholomew County Assistant Ag Agent/Youth Agent in Columbus.

He worked at Delco Remy from May 1, 1952 to May 1, 1982, as plant layout engineer, production supervisor and production general supervisor, and completed layouts for new plants in Fitzgerald, Albany, Ga., and Muncie.

Dale married Joan Miller on July 23, 1950, who subsequently gave birth to six beautiful gifts from God — four girls and two boys. There followed 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He served a total of 18 years on the Pendleton Metropolitan and South Madison School Boards, during which time the original South Elementary and two subsequent additions were built, ground was obtained and Pendleton Heights High School was built and ground was obtained for East Elementary. He served eight years on the Pendleton Fall Creek Township Park Board, during which ground and financing were obtained for Brown’s Pool and construction completed.

Dale also worked eight years for ACA Calumet Contract Engineering Personnel as a recruiter, salesman and Indianapolis office manager and 10 years for South Madison Realty in the areas of listings, sales and appraisals.

He was a member of Pendleton First United Methodist Church for approximately 48 years, working much of that time as an usher and serving previously on various committees including chairman of Finance Committee and Board of Trustees.

The family would like to extend heartfelt love, gratitude, and appreciation to a special friend and caregiver, Aubrey Rhea.

Survivors include his children, Marta (husband, Gary) Nunley of Pendleton, Lisa (husband, Ron) Harlow of Pendleton, Ann Cox of Pendleton, Jason (wife, Teri) Michael of Anderson and Laura (husband, Martin) Burke of Forest Park, Ill.; grandchildren, Heidi Moore, Trent Miller, Eddie Cyman, Erica Thomas, Ashley Cox, Tessa Denen, Corey Cox, Kelsey Burke, Ross Burke and Maggie Burke; great-grandchildren, Tory Vire, Trey Miller, Gavin Swinford, Brock Cyman, Carter Denen, Vann Miller and Bryce Cyman; brother, Kenneth Michael of Pendleton; sister, Carolyn (husband, Kenneth) Rushton of Glenwood; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita Joan (Miller) Michael; son, John D. Michael; grandson, Elliot R. Cyman; great grandbaby, Darby; parents, Charles and Eunice (Hulse) Michael; brother, Donald Michael; and sister, Charlene Robinson.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Lahm Chapel, Pendleton, with Pastor Doug Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Grove Lawn Cemetery in Pendleton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Lahm Chapel.
