ANDERSON, Ind. —
Joseph C. Sparks, 91, of Anderson, and a long time resident of Bloomington, passed away March 30, 2013, at Community Hospital in Anderson after an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 24, 1921, the son of Roy and Myrtle Sparks in Bloomington, and graduated from Bloomington High School and Indiana University.
Joseph began his career in Anderson teaching physical education and then became dean of boys and athletic director, also teaching drivers ed and health and safety. He then retired from Anderson High School as assistant principal.
He was a member of Unionville Church of Christ in Bloomington. He was also a wrestling coach at Anderson High School in the ’50s and ’60s; and was inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Hall of Fame as a wrestler, coach and wrestling official.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
He is survived by his two sons, Scott (wife, Bonnie) Sparks and Monte (wife, Debra) Sparks, all of Anderson; four grandchildren, Jada Sparks of Anderson, Jed Sparks of Indianapolis, Jennifer Dickerson of Westfield and Eric (wife, Megan) Dickerson of Naperville, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, Taylor Sparks, Eli Dickerson, Oliver Dickerson and Daniel Dickerson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bernice Sparks; daughter-in-law, Janet Sparks; grandson, Joseph Fletcher Sparks; and seven brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at The Funeral Chapel of Powell-Deckard in Bloomington.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home with Jim Tallman officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home before the service.
