William Thomas ‘Tom’ Haston

June 5, 1927 - March 30, 2013

ANDERSON, Ind. — William Thomas “Tom” Haston, 85, of Anderson, passed away at his residence, March 30, 2013.

He was born June 5, 1927, in Sparta, Tenn., and resided most of his life in Anderson.

Tom served in the Army and was stationed in Korea, where he volunteered to be a barber. Upon returning home he went to barber school. Eventually he purchased a five-chair barber shop on 10th Street in Anderson. Tom developed Aqua Gardens in 1962 with some investors, which is now called Shadyside Lake, which hundreds walk and jog around daily. There was a beach for swimming, two lakes for fishing and even lessons for water skiing. Major events at the lake included live music with dancing, hydroplane racing, and even Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons performing. During this time Aqua Gardens Marina was started, specializing in selling boats, motors and trailers. After the city bought Aqua Gardens he was employed by Delco Remy in plant protection. He retired in 1986.

Tom enjoyed hobbies: wind surfing, camping, horseback riding, boating, scuba diving, square dancing and traveling with his family. Tom was a former member of the Solar Masonic Lodge.

Tom is survived by his loving spouse of 65 years, whom he married Dec. 26, 1947, Martha (Wilson) Haston of Anderson; nephews, Ronald (Sandy) Haston and Doug (Stacey) Haston; a niece, Vicki (Phil) Frist; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sallie Haston; father, Homer Haston; son, Gary Haston; and a brother, Ray Haston.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, Anderson.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Young officiating. Burial will take place in Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.
