ANDERSON, Ind. —
Derek W. Havens, 40, of Anderson, passed away April 1, 2013, at Community Hospital.
He was born Nov. 7, 1972, in Anderson, and was a lifelong Anderson resident. He graduated from Anderson High School in 1991 and served in the U.S. Army from 1991 to 1995.
Music was a big part of Derek’s life. He often worked as a DJ and enjoyed attending concerts. He was a jokester, enjoyed sports and helping people, including taking care of his ailing grandmother and mother.
He is survived by his maternal grandmother, Opal Huffman of Anderson; mother, Tina Rector of Anderson; sisters, Brooke Havens Talley and Wendy (Chad) Wisnieski, all of Anderson; brother, Jeremy (April) Havens of Anderson; cousin, Byron (Mary) Randall of Anderson; three nephews; one niece; and special friend, Scott Raper of Anderson.
Although Derek struggled with the transition back home after his illness, he was extremely grateful for everyone who supported him, especially Crystal Whinnery.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russell Havens.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Brown-Butz-Diedring Funeral Home, facilitated by his brother, Jeremy. Cremation will follow the funeral services.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with funeral expenses.
