Orpha Mae Baker

May 24, 1939 - May 14, 2014

ANDERSON — Orpha Mae Baker passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on May 14, 2014.

She was born in Madison County, Ill., to the late Chester and Juanita Hudson on May 24, 1939. She grew up in Shipman, Ill., with her five siblings and graduated from Southwestern High School, Class of 1957. Orpha was also known as “Corky,” a pet name that her brother Don gave her as a child. Orpha accomplished many things in her life but the “meaning” of her life was her children.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory four children, Robert (Elena Beldon) Baker of California, Pam (fiancé, Martin VanDenack) Lettinga of Michigan, Barbara Claypool of Noblesville, and Mike (Lisa Heath) Baker of Pendleton; seven grandchildren, Shannon and Jessica Baker from California, Chad (Jennifer), Nichole (Joel Striegle), and Kristy Lettinga, all from Michigan, David Claypool from Muncie and Tiffany Claypool from Noblesville; and five great-grandchildren with one more on her way. Orpha was very close with her siblings and also leaves behind two brothers, Don (Rachel) Hudson, and Jim (Sharon) Hudson, both from North Carolina; and two sisters, Wanda Jean Bullman of Martinsville and Barbara (Jack) Graham of Noblesville; and many nieces and nephews who loved their dear Aunt Orpha.

Orpha is preceded in death by her mother and best friend, Juanita Hudson; her father, Chester Hudson; brother, Bill Hudson; and nephew, Craig J. Hudson.

Visitation will be held at Legacy Cremation & Funeral Services, 504 W. Ninth St., Anderson, on Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. with services at 6 p.m. Pastor Claude Creel will be officiating the service. Orpha will be taken to Pleasant Plain Cemetery in Illinois to be laid to rest next to her mother.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Season’s hospice, nurses and all the doctors that gave Orpha exceptional care throughout her battle with cancer.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Orpha’s name to Seasons Hospice Foundation, First Class 8537 Solution Center, Chicago, IL 60677.
