---- — ALEXANDRIA — Cecil W. Saunders, 88, of Alexandria, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013.

Cecil was employed by VA Northern Indiana Health Care System as a nurses aid. He had also worked as a painter for Joe Payne Interior Decorating, and a maintenance group leader at Ball State University.

Cecil is the son of the late Cecil J. Saunders and the the late Hallie G. (Hall) Saunders. He was born in Henry County on March 7, 1925. He graduated from Summitville High School in 1943. He married Pauline I. Bowers on April 29, 1943. She preceded him in death on Sept. 5, 2011.

Cecil served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 775 Field Artillery Division. He was a member of the first group to break the sound barrier with military artillery. He earned four Bronze Stars and a Sharp Shooter Metal.

Cecil is a former member of the Fairmount Masonic Lodge and the Rigdon Lions Club. He was a member of the Ball State Sympathy Club and enjoyed doing crafts and quilting with Pauline.

Cecil is survived by five daughters, Judy (Andy) Baxter, of Spring Hill,, Fla., Sharon (Michael) Thompson, of Alexandria, Marcia Gilman, of Alexandria, Janet Saunders of Alexandria, Jennifer Johnson of Anderson; a son, David Cecil Saunders of Cornelius, N.C.; one sister, Nancy (Roland) Webb, Anderson; 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters, Edward, Charles Henry, John, Rebecca and Sara Ellen Allen and a grandson, Troy Collins and son-in-law Greg Gilman.

Arrangements are being handled by Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, Ind.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday with funeral service immediately following at 4 p.m. with military rites.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Blessed Savior Lutheran Church in care of the funeral home.
